How to clean your makeup brushes

Hello again! When cleaning your makeup brushes you're trying to accomplish two things: removing old makeup and killing bacteria. The first is pretty obvious, but many makeup brush cleaning solutions don't necessarily kill bacteria, which can lead to breakouts. I adopted this method years ago and it hasn't failed me yet. This solution, uses a mix of antibacterial soap to kill germs and olive oil to condition bristles.

  1. 1 tsp. of olive oil
  2. 3-6 pumps of liquid antibacterial soap
  3. 1 towel
*Cleans about 8-10 brushes

To clean:
  1. Mix the olive oil and soap in a small bowl
  2. Wet the bristles of your brush with water
  3. Dip the tip of your brush into the mixture
  4. Gently rub the bristles back and forth on your palm to lather
  5. Rinse bristles until the water runs clean (repeat steps 3 and 4 if necessary)
  6. Squeeze bristles gently between a towel to remove excess water

To dry:
  1. Fold towel so that it overlaps as shown above
  2. Place brush on a slant to dry; or
  1. Insert each brush handle into a brush guard and slide until the guard is snugly around the bristles
  2. Place your brushes bristles down into a clean glass
I absolutely LOVE Brush Guards! They're stretchable, breathable tubes that slide over the handle of your brush onto the bristles. They fit snugly to help keep the shape of your brush, while the mesh design allows it to dry. Coastal Scents and Amazon carry brush guards which range between $4-$6.

Please note:
  • Wetting your brushes above the bristles may cause the adhesive to come apart; please avoid
  • Brushes must be be dried with bristles down to avoid compromising the glue within the handle
Please comment and share your tips and tricks for keeping your makeup tools squeaky clean...
